Maintaining consistency in the journey of victory in the tenth edition of Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians (MI) won 25th match of IPL by 14 runs. Defeating Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the match played on 22nd April 2017, MI made its position in IPL 2017 more stronger. The team has maintained its first rank in the points table by earning 12 points with the victories in 6 matches.
Playing the seventh match of IPL 10, Rohit Sharma led team had a stuttering commencement to its batting inning. After winning the toss, team DD invited team MI to bat first and proved their decision of opting to bowl first by picking up the wicket of opener batsman Parthiv Patel in early stage of the match. Jos Buttler and Nitish Rana endeavoured to build a necessary partnership for setting up a big target of runs for the opponent team.
Their strategy of hitting huge shots didn’t work in this game. Buttler scores 28 runs in 18 balls and Rana made 8 runs in 9 balls. After witnessing a consistent fall of wickets after the dismissal of these two players alongside Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya tried their best to put a pause to the fall of wickets and score runs for the team.
The right handed batsman, who is known as a powerful hitter in West Indies’ cricket team, scored 26 runs in 29 balls and scored runs with normal run rate. Krunal Pandya too followed the same pattern of scoring runs and made 17 runs in 16 balls. After his wicket, his brother Hardik Pandya played a speedy inning and scored 24 runs in 23 balls.
After the dismissal of Pandya, Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh and other batsmen in lower order of batting lineup failed to score big runs. With this stuttering performances of all cricketers in MI’s batting lineup, the team ended its inning with an average score of 142 runs in twenty overs. Mumbai Indians lost its 8 wickets while setting up this huge target.
While chasing this normal score, DD team had a poor start as top six batsmen in its batting lineup lost their wickets in the early stage of the match. Neither top order nor middle order of Delhi Daredevil team’s batting lineup could succeed in settling down on the crease. Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris played pivotal roles in taking up the team’s score to triple digit runs.
Kagiso Rabada scored 44 runs in 39 balls and Chris Morris made 52 runs in 41 balls. After Rabada lost his wicket in 19th over, Morris tried his best to make his team win the game by setting up a partnership with Pat Cummins. His strategy didn’t work in the end of the over as the team needed 23 runs in 6 balls. Bowling attack of Mumbai Indians didn’t let the cricketers of opposite team succeed in acquiring victory in this game.
