Afghanistan won the 18th match of ICC Intercontinental Cup against Ireland. Registering victory in stylish manner, Afghanistan won the game by an inning and 172 runs. Match between these two teams ended on 3rd day with Afghanistan clinching the match by a big margin of runs and an inning.
Batting first in this match, Afghanistan built up a huge score of 537 runs in 138.5 overs. Mohammad Shahzad (85 runs), Rahmat Shah (46 runs), skipper Asghar Stanikzai (145 runs), Nasir Jamal (72 runs), wicket keeper Afsar Zazai (103 runs) and Dawlat Zadran (32 runs) played crucial roles in setting up this big score in their first inning of batting.
Irish team had a stuttering start to its batting inning. Opener batsman and team’s captain William Porterfield scored only 4 runs and lost his wicket in early stage of the inning. Ed Joyce (45 runs) and Andrew Balbirnie (62 runs) tried to settle on the crease. But the opponent team’s bowler didn’t let the batsmen build a huge partnership in between them.
Except John Anderson, who scored 61 runs and remained not out till the end of inning, no other batsman in the middle as well as order batting lineup succeeded in playing good inning for totalling a big score for the team. Irish team lost all ten wickets and scored 261 runs in 91.4 overs. Irish team was again invited for batting as per ‘follow-on’ rule.
In their second inning, no batsman was successful in scoring a good number of runs. The team could score only 104 runs in 40 overs with loss of all ten wickets. Mohammad Nabi picked up maximum six wickets in Ireland’s second batting inning. Rashid Khan picked up three wickets while Dawlat Zadran picked up one wicket in this inning. Thus, Afghanistan won the game by an inning and 135 runs.
