Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) defeated Gujarat Lions (GL) in the 26th match of Indian Premier League 2017. KXIP won the game by 26 runs and witnessed an improvement in its rank in IPL 2017 points table. Led by Suresh Raina, team GL won the toss and opted to bowl first. While batting first, KXIP scored 188 runs and GL failed to chase this triple digit score in 20 overs.
KXIP had a decent opening to its batting inning as its opener batsman Manan Vhora returned to pavilion after scoring only 2 runs in 4 balls. After the first wicket, next batsmen Hashim Amla and Shaun Marsh endeavoured to continue the team’s score by maintaining the steady run rate. Amla scored 65 runs in 40 balls and Marsh made 30 runs in 24 balls.
After the dismissal of these two players, KXIP team’s captain Glenn Maxwell played a speedy inning and scored 31 runs in 18 balls. He was accompanied by Axar Patel, who scored 34 runs in 17 balls and contributed majorly in setting up the huge target of 189 runs for the opponents. Thus, the first inning of the match ended with KXIP scoring triple digit runs.
While chasing the target of 189 runs, GL had a stuttering commencement to its batting inning as the opener batsman Brendon McCullum lost his wicket in the very first over. Aron Finch was the next batsman who replaced McCullum and scored 13 runs in 12 balls. He was assisted by Suresh Raina, who scored 32 runs in 24 balls.
Aron Finch too failed to play a big inning and lost his wicket in sixth over. Wicket-keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik came to bat next and showcased excellent performance. The right handed batsman scored 58 runs in 44 balls. But his knock wasn’t quite enough for the team to attain victory as players at other end of the strike failed to accompany him to form a strong partnership.
After the wickets of Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Smith and Akshdeep Nath, Dinesh tried to take the team’s score near victory with the assistance of Andrew Tye. Tye scored 22 runs in 12 balls and lost his wicket while hitting a big shot. Basil Thampi arrived on ground after the dismissal of Tye. Dinesh and Basil tried their best to abridge the gap between required runs and balls left to score those runs.
Karthik and Basil remained not out till the end of game, but their partnership didn’t succeed in making their team win the game. The match ended with GL scoring 162 runs in 20 overs. The team, which had defeated strong KKR in previous game by successfully chasing the target of 188 runs, failed to make 189 runs in this match and lost seven wickets while making the runs.
